• Quality of room was extremely poor.

“Great location. The hotel lobby is nice but, the rooms are terrible. The carpet is worn, the bathroom old and fixtures were cracked. I should have known when I could get this hotel at a discounted rate for a weekend, I was in for trouble with quality.”

“The staff was excellent, going far beyond the norm. My room was clean, however, not out of the ordinary. I expected the luxury of having my own coffee maker, without having to ask for room service. There was only one robe available. The beds were very comfortable and the lines were of high quality. I would say was pleased with the hotel, but it did not have the spark to make me want to return.”

“Great Location, Great Staff, old world charm with modern conveniences. Bathrooms a bit small but updated. Bed was wonderful, lines were shopworn and patched, (sheet on king size bed) Smoke detector was hanging down from mount is ceiling. Small details need attention.”

• Great location; across the street from Central Park; easy to get cabs.
• Room 1717 was drab and dated; the view was a solid brick wall; horrible service in Botanica Restaurant.

“Great location. Front desk person was very nice about canceling the 2nd night since my mom wasn't well. Problem: Package included complimentary breakfast in Botanical Restaurant. The coupon did NOT state the hours breakfast was served. My parents arrived 5 minutes late and manager said, "You're late. The dining room is closed." Several tables still had diners, some being served their 1st course of orange juice!) My parents were very upset by this rudeness and rigid, we-could-care-less treatment. Walking is difficult for them, but they were forced to find somewhere else to eat outside the hotel. Therefore, we will not stay at the Essex House again.”

• It was close to Central Park so walking to the park was easy.

“The hotel was nice. The staff were nice. The room was reasonably clean. There were some annoyances. The bedroom linen setup is annoying, please just give me a top/bottom sheet and a blanket and be done with it. The shower was great and the towels nice but very little counter space for a bathroom kit. The seat of the toilet didn't fit so it was like you were on a carousel ride everytime you went to the bathroom. We had a lovely view of a multi-tiered parking garage. The hotel location was great if you wanted to visit Central Park but a bit of a hoof if you were going shopping or to the theatre. Really annoying that they close the 58th street entrance after 10PM. For those of us attending the theater having to walk all the way around to get to the main entrance was a pain and a security risk for us. Given the location of their security personnel, I fail to see why this had to be done. Again, the hotel staff were very sweet.”

“The Westin Essex House is a very nice hotel. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The rooms were comfortable and clean. It was away from the hustle & bustle of the theater district, yet close enough to walk to. We would stay there again.”

“Facility was excellent; staff was generally helpful and courteous, but our visit was marred at the end. It was a windy day and the doorman carelessly let the (very heavy) front door slam into my companion. He saw it happen and didn't even apologize or offer help.”

“Overall, we had a great time at the Essex House. The location can't be beat, the rooms were pleasant, and the bed was comfortable. Only a couple of gripes... First of all, in-room dining was insanely expensive (this coming from someone who lives in San Francisco!). Secondly, our room was robe-less, and we didn't get replacements despite a request to the staff. Finally, the room wasn't totally perfect - dirty windows, broken lamp, slightly messed-up wallpaper. That said, the hotel (and our room) was pleasant enough.”

“This hotel is top quality as it's rating implies. The rooms were spacious (we were given a suite) and comfortable--very up to date features in bathrooms. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent. Most importantly, the hotel is located in a perfect location for walking and seeing the sights of New York. I would highly recommend a stay at this hotel.”

• Great location; close to subway. Heavenly bed was very comfortable
• Room was tiny. Bathroom could have been cleaner. Shower was difficult to use. We were not able to use express checkout. Room with no view.

“We are from Long Island and knew not to have major expectations for the price we paid for this 4 star hotel. So we were not disappointed. Staff were friendly enough and we had a comfortable bed to put our heads down at night. That's as much as you need in NYC when you are spending most of your time enjoying the City.”

“Went for a weekend in January 2005. Beautiful place to stay. Our room was small and did not face Central Park, but all the same it was gorgeous. The beds are so comfortable, and the shower is really great, too. Close enough to subway stations and easy to get cabs (doorman will do it for you). If you want to treat yourself to a luxurious hotel stay, this is a good place to do it. There is a great French cafe around the corner - Pain de Quotidien - where we went for breakfast every morning, and a very cool, low-key (and very dark!) NY bar - Whiskey Park (played music like U2, Coldplay, etc. and had comfy sofas and window seats to hang out in) - about 1 block in the other direction. Ask the concierge for directions to both. Central Park horse & carriage rides are right outside the hotel's front door. Valet parking is a bit pricey (we paid $45 per day w/o in-and-out privileges), but you don't really need your car in NYC. There are other parking garages very nearby, but we decided to spoil ourselves. I would certainly recommend this hotel.”

• We liked the location, the comfortable beds and bedding, our room was very quite from outside noises and the staff were friendly and helpful .
• We felt everything was in place our first night, the second night, the maid did not replace the bath cloths and robes in the room as had greeted us.

“This is a beautiful hotel which is located in an absolutely perfect location. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are a good size. The heating/cooling system has a fan running which circulates air all the time and drowns out noises which would be heard from outside or from the hallway. The staff is friendly and very helpful answering any questions we had and giving directions to museums or theaters.”
