Cafe American is located in the American Hotel, which is found next to the Leidseplein. Calling it a "cafe" really doesn't do it justice - this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. All in all, this place is definitely one to visit.
